Pfizer, the maker of the popular prescription hair growth treatment Propecia, said Thursday it would cut costs by 90 percent in the United States.
The move would give Pfizer more time to cut costs and would save customers money. It's the first in its class of drugs that includes the prescription medication Avodart, which is marketed as a treatment for male pattern baldness.
Pfizer has been spending about $500 million a year to cover the cost of Avodart, the world's most expensive prescription drug.
It has a "very large" list of prescription drugs that are not covered by the Food and Drug Administration.
"The decision will be taken with the goal of reducing the cost of these medicines, as well as ensuring that patients and their families will be able to access these treatments," said Pfizer spokesman Ed Zellweger. "We are committed to providing patients with access to affordable, high-quality medicines that can be purchased at a very low cost."
The move comes as some doctors are increasingly turning to drugs to treat female pattern hair loss, known as androgenetic alopecia.
For people whose condition is linked to an inherited gene, such as orrogenetic alopecia, treatment with finasteride, the generic version of Propecia, or Avodart, the pill, comes with a "significant cost savings." The generic version has been available for years and is only approved to treat pattern hair loss, a type of hair loss that causes hair thinning.
For women, the pills have been used to treat female pattern hair loss, but their price tag has grown, Zellweger said.
"There is an increased interest in the drug in the medical community," he said.
Finasteride is the only drug approved by the FDA to treat pattern hair loss.
The drug is already available as a prescription medication, but doctors can sometimes prescribe it for other conditions.
Some doctors, particularly those who practice pharmacy medicine, prescribe it off-label.
Dr. John Zook, an assistant professor at University of Illinois, Chicago and the director of the Clinical Pharmacology Center in Lakeland, said that if someone is prescribed the pill, the price tag would be lower than with a medication he or she can buy for a full cost.
The cost of finasteride, which has been available in generic form since 1999, will be lower, he said, but it will be cheaper in the U. S., where it has been available for many years.
The drug will be sold at pharmacies and stores that sell it.
In the U. S., sales of finasteride are up about 20 percent this year, Zellweger said.
But some doctors are concerned that it will hurt their patients who already take the pill, he said.
Some doctors, such as Zook, are more inclined to prescribe drugs like Propecia, which is approved to treat male pattern hair loss, because they see the benefits of it as "a good thing." They also are concerned about the potential for side effects such as low blood pressure and heart attack.
But Zellweger said that may not be enough.
"I am a patient, and my family, I'm not happy with that," he said.
Propecia, which was developed by Merck and launched in 1997, also has been sold to patients for hair loss treatment.
While doctors say the cost of the pill is likely to be less than with other treatments, Zellweger said it is not worth the extra money.
